Question | Answer |
---|---|
air mass | a large region of the atmosphere in which the air has similar properties |
barometer | a device for measuring air pressure |
blizzard | a snowstorm with 56 km/hour winds and enough snowfall that you can only see up to one quarter of mile. |
current | an ocean movement, a large stream of water that flows in the ocean |
El Nino | A change in weather conditions caused by the sinking of the cold current in the Pacific Ocean. Characterized by higher tides, heavy rainfalls, and storms along the coast of North and South America |
global winds | a wind that blows steadily in a predictable direction over long distances |
insolation | the amount of the sun's energy that reaches Earth |
tornado | a rotating funnel shaped cloud with winds up to 500 km/hr |
weather | the condition of the troposphere at a particular place and time. |
weather map | a map that shows the weather in a specific area at a specific time. |
thermosphere | The fourth layer of the Earth's atmosphere. |
stratosphere | The layer of the Earth's atmosphere immediately above the troposphere |
troposphere | The layer of gases closest to the Earth's surface in the atmosphere. (5-11 miles thick) |
humidity | the amount of water vapor in the air |
front | the boundary between two air masses |
Gulf Stream | Moves along the east coast of the United States |
hurricane | a very large, swirling storm with very low pressure at the center, and wind speeds greater than 119 km/hr |
cyclone | any storm with low pressure center that causes a circular pattern of winds to form |
weather with low pressure system | Warm and stormy weather |
weather with high pressure system | Dry clear weather |
tropical storm to hurricane | When the wind speed reaches 119 km/h (74 mph) |
Exosphere | The layer of the Earth's atmosphere furthest away from the Earth's surface. The last layer. |
