Kidneys and renal sy

animal physiology exam 3

TermDefinition
What makes up the Renal System 2 kidneys, 2 ureters,1 bladder and 1 urethra
List the 6 functions of the Kidney 1)regulate ECF through formation of urine 2)regulate volume of blood plasma 3)regulate waste products in blood 4)regulate concentration of electrolytes 5)regulate pH 6)Regulate erythopoietin
Kidneys produce how much filtrate? 180l, we only have 5.5 L of blood. most filtrate is returned to blood. we pee 1.5 L per day.
What is antidiurectic hormone it's produced by the hypothalamus released by the posterior pituitary. Increase is plasma osmolality as determined by osmorecptors in brain.
what is aldosterone? a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex.* stimulates salt retention from kidneys, which affects retention of water.
what secretes renin? juxtaglomerular apparatus
Renin produces what? renin produces angiotensin I from angiotensin
What is ANP Atrial natriutetic peptide, increases sodium and water excretion in urine= decrease in blood volume
where is ANP produced? Atrium of the heart, decreases secretion of aldosterone.
Structure of the kidneys, horse, cow, sheep and pig horse:heart shaped, cow:cluster of grapes, sheep:kidney bean, pig:small kidney bean.
what is the functional unit of the kidney? Nephron is the functional unit of the kidneys, located in the cortex and produces urine
what is the nephron composed of? 1)glomerulus: fluid is filtered from the blood 2)long tubule:filtered fulid is converted into urine on it's way to the pelvis
Where doe Glomerulus blood enter? where does blood leave? glomerulus blood enters through afferent arteriole and blood leaves through efferent arterioles
what are the bowmans capsules? epithelial cells covering the glomerulus
Define glomerulus? is an area of high pressure, fluid will leak out and enter the bowman's capsule and flow into the proximal tubule
What is the proximal convoluted tubule? single layer of cubodial cells with millions of microvilli, functions are reabsorption and secretion
what is the loop of Henle? fluid flows from proximal tube into the loop, travels into medulla. 2 parts the descending limb and ascending limb.
