Terrestrial/inner planets Small, rocky, high density planets inside the asteroid belt
Jovian/outer planets Large, gaseous, low density planets outside of the asteroid belt
Asteroids Pieces of broken planet found in the asteroid belt
Where is the asteroid belt? Between Mars and Jupiter
List the planets in order from the sun. 1. Mercury, 2. Venus, 3. Earth, 4. Mars, 5. Jupiter, 6. Saturn, 7. Uranus, 8. Neptune
What are the similarities in inner planets? They are similar in composition and atmospheres.
What planet has about the same rotation time as earth? Mars
Which inner planets do not have a moon? Mercury or Venus
What object has discovered many features on Mars? Landers/ rovers
Define fusion. The combing of H2 to make helium.
What is the sun made up of? Hydrogen and Helium
Define meteoroids Left over pieces left of a comet's tail floating in space
Define meteor The act of meteoroids entering the earth's atmosphere where they burn
Define meterorite A meteor that strikes earth
What are similar about the planets orbits. They are all ellipses (ovals)
What causes seasons on earth? The earth 23 1/2 degrees tilt on the axis combined with the earth's revolution.
Define solstice When the sun is at the most northern point or at the most southern point
What is the impact Theory? A theory that state the moon was formed when the earth was struck by a large object. Causing the ejected material from the earth to form into the moon.
What causes tides on earth? The moon's gravitational pull
What was Galileo's discovery? He discovered 5 planets and moons moving around Jupiter.
What is the significance of the Hubble Space telescope? It allowed people to look farther into the universe giving us clear pictures of the universe.
What is the significance of planetary orbiters? They give specific information about planets they orbit.
All planets have moons except for? Mercury and Venus
