Chapter 10
Forces
Chapter10 | Answer |
---|---|
force | a push or pull |
newton | The strength of a force is measured in the SI unit. Value: 1 kg.m/s2 |
Net Force | The combination of all forces acting on an object. |
Unbalanced Forces | Whenever there is a net force acting on an object the forces are unbalnced. Motion occurs. |
balanced forces | Equal forces acting on one object in oppisite directions. |
friction | The force that two surfaces exert on each other when they rub against each other |
Static Friction | The friction that acts on objects that are not moving |
sliding friction | occurs when two solid surfaces slide over each other |
rolling friction | When an object rolls across a surface |
Fluid friction | When a solid object moves through a fluid |
Gravity | A force that pulls objects toward each other |
weight | Force of gravity on a person or object at the surface of a planet |
freefall | When the force on an object is gravity |
air resistance | Objects falling through air experience a type of fluid friction |
terminal | The greatest velocity a falling object reaches |
porjectile | When an object is thrown horizontal to earths surface. |
Inertia | The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
momentum | a characterisitic of a moving object that is related to the mass and the velocity of the object |
law of conservation of momentum | in the absence of outside forces the total momentum of objects that interact does not change. |
centripetal force | Any force that causes on object to move in a circular path |
satellites | in an orbit around the Earth continuolsy fall toward Earth, but because Earth is curved they travel around it |
