antibiotic | substance that kills or inhibits the growth of bacteria |
antibiotic spectrum | variety of microbes that a particular antibiotic can treat |
antibiotic susceptibility | identification of the antibiotics, by bacterial culture and sensitivity testing, that will be effective against specific bacteria |
anti-infective | natural or synthetic substance capable of destroying or inhibiting the growth of bacteria |
antimicrobial | substance that inhibits the growth of or kills microorganisms |
bacteria | group of unicellular, non-nucleated organisms |
bactericidal | able to destroy bacteria |
bacteriostatic | able to inhibit the reproduction of bacteria |
beta lactamase | enzyme secreted by some microbes that has the ability to destroy beta-lactam antibiotics |
broad spectrum | drug that is effective against both gram negative and gram positive pathogenic bacteria |
cross-resistance | development of resistance to one drug in a particular class that results in resistance to the other drugs in that class |
empirical therapy | when anti-infective treatment is started, but the organism responsible has not been identified; it is more important to start a treatment with high probability of success than wait |
inhibit | to keep a reaction from taking place |
microbial resistance | ability of bacteria to resist the effects of an anti-infective |
normal flora | microorganisms that reside harmlessly in the body and do not cause disease but may aid the host organism |
nosocomial infection | infection acquired during a stay in a hospital |
parasite | organism that requires a host for nourishment and reproduction |
penicillinase | an enzyme produced by various microorganisms which inactivates most of the penicillins |
pneumonia | inflammatory condition of the lungs |
symbiotic | close relationship between two species |
