Air Science

6th Grade Mrs.Dalton's Air Study guide

QuestionAnswer
What is the Green House Effect? The Greenhouse Effect is the process by which gases in the Atmosphere absorb thermal energy and radiate it back to Earth.
What is Radiation? Energy in, energy out. The amount of Energy Earth receives.
Air in the atmosphere has pressure because air has .... mass
What instrument is use to measure air pressure? Barometer
What happens to air pressure as you go up the mountain? It decreases
Why do Global winds seen to curve? Criollos Affect
How do Global winds differ. from local winds? One goes across the globs and the other is local also one is affected by the Criollos Affect.
What is Radiation heating? The Earth receives energy from the sun by Radiation. Radiation is the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves.
What is Conduction heating? Thermal conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a material.
What is Convection heating? Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas.
Argon .934%
Oxygen 21%
Nitrogen 78%
What is weather? The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place.
What is the atmosphere? The layer of gases that surrounds Earth.
What is the Ozone? A form of oxygen with three atoms instead of one.
What is water vapor? Water in the form of gas.
What is oxygen? Gas used by living things to turn food into energy.
Why is the ozone layer important? Because it blocks U-V rays from the sun.
Troposphere The layer of the atmosphere closet to the earth is the troposphere. This layer is where weather occurs. It begins at the surface of the earth and extends out to about 4-12miles
Stratosphere Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, which extends to about 30-35 miles above the Earth's surface. Temperature rises within the stratosphere but still remains well below freezing.
Mesosphere From about 35 to 50 miles above the surface of the earth lies the mesosphere.
Thermosphere The thermosphere rises several hundred miles above the earth's surface, from 50 miles up to about 400 miles.
Exosphere Extending from the top of the thermosphere to 6200 miles (10,000 km) above the earth is the exosphere. This layer has very few atmospheric molecules, which can escape into space.
How do winds form Winds form because air moves from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
Which direction do winds curve in the northern hemisphere? Southern hemisphere? northern- clockwise Southern- counter clockwise
What are the three types of heat transfer? Conduction, Convection, Radiation
What type of radiation does sun give off? Solar Radiation
What is acid rain? Rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm, typically to forests and lakes.
