1-Atomic Theory
Atoms, periodic table
Term | Definition |
---|---|
atoms | Smallest unit of matter. Also known as elements. |
electrons | subatomic particle with a negative charge. It is located in the electron cloud. Can be determined by looking at the atomic number. Has an atomic mass unit of 0. |
groups | Columns of the periodic table. There are 18 groups on the periodic table. |
matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume). |
neutrons | subatomic particle that has a neutral charge, located in the nucleus, and has an atomic mass of 1. Can be determined by subtracting the atomic mass (rounded) by the atomic number (number of protons) |
periods | rows of the periodic table. There are 7 rows of the periodic table. |
protons | subatomic particle with a positive charge. It is located in the nucleus and determines the identity of an atom. Can be determined by looking at the atomic number. Has an atomic mass unit of 1. |
things that are matter | desk, student, bugs, air |
things that are not matter | light, heat, electricity, feelings, emotions, energy |
valence electrons | Electrons in the last ring of the electron cloud. |
