Georgia compact was an agreement w/ the U.S Government t in which (1) Georgia gave up land to the west (2)U.S paid them $1.25 mill and (3)U.S would remove Indians from Georgia as soon as possible John Calhoun was secretary of war and primary creator of Indians removal
He believed if indians were educated like colonist, they would realize removal was best for them Education programs were supported by churches ,tribes and U.S government
Choctaws were chosen to be removed 1st b/c they made fastest progress in the ed programs Andrew Jackson,who was Indian commissioner , told Pushmataba to move west or die in the east.As a result , Choctaw signed their 1st removal treaty , Treaty of Doak's stand
Treaty of doak's stand was abolished b/c Choctaw land Indian territory was already settled by 3000 whites INDIAN REMOVAL ACT of 1830 did not authorize forced removal but many Indians realized removal was inevitable
In September 1830,Choctaw met w/ government representatives , the Choctaw missionaries were not allowed to attend the meeting TREATY OF DANCING RABBIT CREEK Choctaw provisions (1) cede 10 million acres in Mississippi (2) accept a similar amount in Indian Territory (3) remove over a 3 year period
Treaty of dancing Rabbit Creek Government provisions (1) pay for removal (2) protect the Choctaw (3) pay 20,000 annuity for 20 year Treaty of dancing rabbit creek established government policy on Indians removal treaties
4,000 Choctaw left in the 1st removal group in Oct 1831 250 died 1st removal was a disaster b/c of poor planing , lack of supplies and sever winter weather
Private contractors were too expressive so the army was ordered to carry out the 2nd removal Many whites who lived along the removal routes wrote letters to Washington D.D about the Choctaw's treatment during removal
The upper creeks were full-bloods led by opothleyahola the lower creeks ere mixed - bloods led by the McIntosh family
In 1811 the creek council passed a law stating that anyone who ceded creek land w/o the council's approval would be executed Tecumseh, shaunee chief asked the creek an Indian confederacy . the creek council refused
The red sticks were creek warriors who carried red war clubs that were blessed by a shaman William McIntosh signed the Treaty of Indians Springs to remove the creeks the led to his execution
Pres John Adams Quincy declared the treaty invalid In 1832 opothleyahola signed a treaty that included (1)creeks cede all land east of Mississippi River (2)They will leave as soon possible and (3)U.S will pay for removal
15,000 creeks refuse to leave 2,5000 had to be removed in claims General windfield scott was sent to remove the creeks
After arriving at Ft. Gibson in Spring of 1837 3500 creeks died from disease and exposure
