Pharmacology Analgesic Drugs Chapter 22

Analgesic means pertaining to no pain.
Analgesics are classified as narcotic analgesics and non-narcotic analgesics.
Most narcotic analgesics can cause an addictive feeling of well being called euphoria.
Many analgesics work by raising the pain threshold.
Narcotic analgesics include: 1. Stadol. 2. Dilaudid. 3. Demerol AKA meperidine. 4. MS Contin or Roxanol AKA morphine sulfate {MSO4}. 5. Nubain (no pain). 6. OxyContin AKA oxycodone. 7. Talwin. 8. codeine.
Codeine is also classified as an antitussive (cough suppressant).
Non-narcotic analgesics and antipyretics include: Tylenolol or Panadol AKA acetaminophen (APAP).
Bleeding problems can occur if acetaminophen (APAP) is combined with Gingko biloba.
50% of acute liver failure in America is linked to acetaminophen overdose.
Annually, 56,000 Americans develop liver damage from acetaminophen overdose (NBC).
The classifications for aspirin (ASA) are: anticoagulant, non-narcotic analgesic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and antipyretic. ANNA
Trade names for aspirin (ASA) include: 1. Anacin. 2. Bayer. 3. Ecotrin (enteric coated).
Use of aspirin (ASA) every day (qd) has been shown to reduce the risk of developing colorectal, esophageal, stomach, breast, and lung malignancies by 38%.
Buffered ASA medications include: 1. Alka-Seltzer. 2. Ascriptin. 3. Bufferin.
Buffers include: 1. Al (aluminum). 2. Mg (magnesium). 3. Ca (calcium). 4. NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate).
ASA, APAP, diphenhydramine and caffeine combination drugs include: 1. Anacin Maximum Strength (ASA + caffeine). 2. Bayer PM (ASA + diphenhydramine). 3. Vanquish (ASA + APAP + caffeine). 4. Excedrin Extra Strength or Excedrin Migraine (ASA + APAP + caffeine).
Combination narcotic and non-narcotic analgesics include: 1. Empirin #3 AKA codeine and ASA. 2. Percodan + Roxiprin AKA oxycodone and ASA. 3. Percocet, Roxilox, Roxicet, Tylox, + Endocet AKA oxycodone and acetaminophen(APAP). 4. Tylenol #3 AKA codeine and APAP. 5. Vicodin AKA APAP and hydrocodone.
Narcotic and non-narcotic medications are commonly combined to produce a synergistic effect.
The following medications are classified as antipyretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and non-narcotic analgesics: {ANN} 1. Motrin or Advil AKA ibuprofen. 2. Aleve or Naprosyn AKA naproxen. 3. Celebrex AKA celecoxib.
Long term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the risk of cardiac pathology.
A migraine is a chronic, severe, usually temporal headache (H/A) accompanied by N+V, sensitivity to sound, and photophobia.
Medications used to treat migraines include: 1. Imitrex. 2. Tenormin AKA atenolol. 3. Lopressor or Toprol AKA metoprolol. 4. Corgard AKA nadolol. 5. Inderal AKA propranolol. 6. Cardizem AKA diltiazem. 7. Calan AKA verapamil. 8. Ergomar AKA ergotamine. 9. Treximet. 10. Topamax.
