kinetic theory The body of theory that explains the physical properties of matter in terms of the motions of its constituent particles.
melting point The temperature at which a given solid will melt.
heat of fusion heat absorbed by a unit mass of a solid at its melting point in order to convert the solid into a liquid at the same temperature;
boiling point The temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor. The boiling point for fresh water at sea level is 212°F (100°C).The point at which anger or excitement breaks out into violent expression: "racial tension surges to boiling point".
heat of vaporization heat absorbed by a unit mass of a material at its boiling point in order to convert the material into a gas at the same temperature.
diffusion The spreading of something more widely. The action of spreading the light from a light source evenly so as to reduce glare and harsh shadows.
plasma matter consisting of positively and negatively charged particles.
thermal expansion Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. All materials have this tendency.
buoyancy The ability or tendency to float in water or other fluid. The power of a liquid to keep something afloat.
pressure amount of force exerted per unit area;si unit is the pascal
viscosity a fluid's resistance to flow.
