Facts on invention and technology in the machine age.

QuestionAnswer
What is the flying shuttle? A machine that sped up the weaving process.
What is the spinning Jenny? A machine that enabled spinners to spin cotton into thread very quickly.
What is the cotton gin? A machine that cleaned cotton 50 times more quickly that a person could.
What is puddling? A process that used coke to burn away impurities in iron ore.
What is a patent? The exclusive ownership of an invention, for the process from the United States Patent Office.
What is a open hearth process? A method that used special furnace to make many kinds of steel.
What is a steam engine? A invention that allowed factories to be built almost anywhere because the steam engine did not rely on water power.
What is mass production? This is a manufacture of huge quantities if identical goods at cheap prices.
What are interchangeable parts? The use of machine-made parts that are exactly alike.
What is division of labor? It occurs by assigning workers to be specialized tasks as a product moves along a conveyer belt from worker to worker.
What is a assembly line? When products are assembled in a moving line.
