asthma | chronic disease that affects the airways producing irritation, inflammation, and difficulty breathing |
broncodilator | a medication that relaxes tightened airway muscles & improves airflow through the airways |
corticosteroids | a class of drugs that stimulate adenylate cylase & act as antiinflammatory agents to suppress the immune system |
cough reflex | response of the body to clear air passages of foreign substances & mucus by a forceful expiration |

cyanosis | bluish, gray coloring of skin associated with decreased oxygen |
decongestant | a medication that reduces swelling of the mucous membranes by constricting dilated blood vessels |
dyspnea | difficulty breathing or painful breathing |
emphysema | chronic condition of increased air in the alveoli that cannot be exhaled |

leukotrine inhibitor | an agent that blocks the body's inflammatory responses to the leukotrienes or blocks their synthesis |
mast cells | granule-containing cells found in tissue |

productive cough | a cough that expectorates mucous secretions |
prophylaxis | treatment given before an event or exposure to prevent the occurrence of a condition or symptom |

urticaria | hives |
viscosity | thickness of a solution or fluid |
wheal | raised blister-like area on the skin |
