broncodilator a medication that relaxes tightened airway muscles & improves airflow through the airways

cyanosis bluish, gray coloring of skin associated with decreased oxygen
decongestant a medication that reduces swelling of the mucous membranes by constricting dilated blood vessels

emphysema chronic condition of increased air in the alveoli that cannot be exhaled
expectorant a medication that helps remove mucous secretions by loosening & thinning the sputum & bronchial secretions for ease of expectoration
forced expiratory volume maximum volume of air that can be breathed out in one second
hypoxia having too little oxygen
influenza respiratory tract infection caused by a virus
leukotrine inhibitor an agent that blocks the body's inflammatory responses to the leukotrienes or blocks their synthesis
mast cells granule-containing cells found in tissue
mast cell stabilizer an agent that stabilizes mast cell membranes against rupture caused by antigenic substances & thereby reduces the amount of histamine & other inflammatory substances released in airway tissues
metered dose inhaler a device that delivers a specific amount of medication in a puff of compressed gas
monoclonal antibody an antibody produced in a laboratory from an isolated specific lymphocyte that produces a pure antibody against a known specific antigen
mucolytics agents that destroy or dissolve mucus
nebulizer a device that makes a mist out of liquid inhalant solution
nonproductive cough a cough that doses not produce mucous secretion
peak flow meter device that is used to measure the volume of air exhaled & how fast the air is moved out
productive cough a cough that expectorates mucous secretions
prophylaxis treatment given before an event or exposure to prevent the occurrence of a condition or symptom
spacer a device used with a metered dose inhaler to decrease the amount of spray deposited on the back of the throat
spirometry test that measures the volume of air that is expired after taking a deep breath & how rapidly the volume of air is expired
sputum fluid that is expectorated from the lungs & bronchial tissues
urticaria hives
viscosity thickness of a solution or fluid
wheal raised blister-like area on the skin
xanthine derivative a drug that causes relaxation of airway smooth muscle, thus causing airway dilation & better air movement
