P1 Renewable
Edexcel P1 Renewable vs non-renewable energy
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Name 6 renewable energy resources | Solar cells, Hydroelectricity, Wind turbines, geothermal, tidal power and wave power |
What does "renewable" mean? | The resource will not run out |
What is the drawback of Solar cells? | They do not work at night. |
What are solar cells? | Like the ones on your calculators: they convert light energy into electrical energy |
How is hydroelectricity generated? | Falling water turns turbines that turn a generator |
What is the benefit of hydroelectricity? | It can be started (and stopped) very quickly; it works by all weather |
What is the drawback of hydroelectricity? | You need to build dams across mountains and that destroys habitats;there are not many suitable places |
What is tidal power? | When the tide turns turbines that turn a generator |
What is the benefit of tidal power? | It comes on at predictable times |
What is the drawback of tidal power? | You need to build dams across an estuary (river mouth)and that destroys habitats; there are not many suitable places |
What is geothermal energy? | When the hot rocks turn water into steam; the steam then turns turbines that turn a generator |
What is the benefit of geothermal energy? | Available all the time |
What is the drawback of geothermal energy? | Only available in certain places/volcanic areas like Iceland |
What is wave power? | As a sea wave passes through, air is moved up and down; this turns a turbine that turns a generator |
What is the benefit of wave power? | Available all the time (best in winter) |
What is the drawback of wave power? | People may oppose them |
What is the benefit of solar cells | Works best in summer |
What is the drawback of wind turbines? | Some people think that they spoil the landscape, that they are noisy; they need wind (work best in winter) |
Name 4 non-renewable sources of energy | Coal, oil, gas and uranium |
What is the benefit of power stations that use coal, oil or gas? | Available all the time: reliable source of energy. Produces a lot of energy (more cheaply than renewable sources). |
What are TWO advantages of gas over coal or oil? | No Sulphur Dioxide produced. Less Carbon Dioxide (for same amount of electricity produced) |
What are TWO drawbacks of power stations that use coal, oil or gas? | They produce Carbon Dioxide (responsible for global warming) and Sulphur Dioxide (responsible for acid rain) |
What is the benefit of nuclear Power Station? | They do not produce any CO2 or SO2. Available all the time: reliable source of energy. Produces a lot of energy (more cheaply than renewable sources). |
What is the drawback of Nuclear power Stations | At the end of its life, the nuclear power station needs to be decommisionned carefully. That makes Nuclear Power Stations more expensive than fossil fuel ones. |
What does "decommission" mean? | Dismantling safely and burying the radioactive material |
What is the fuel in a Nuclear power station? | Uranium |
Why can Nuclear Power Stations be very dangerous? | The radioactive material causes cancer and can be transported over long distance by the wind |
