Linear Systems

QuestionAnswer
System of equations Two or more equations with the same variables.
Consistent A system of equations that has at least one solution.
Inconsistent A system of equation that has no variables.
Independent A consistent system that has exactly one solution.
Dependent A consistent system that has an infinite number of solutions.
Substitution Method A method for solving linear systems in which when solving for one variable, you substitute it in for the other equation to solve for the other variable.
Elimination Method A method for solving linear systems in which one eliminates one variable to solve for the other variable, then using that to solve for the one that was just eliminated.
System of Inequalities A set of inequalities with the same variables.
Constraints Conditions given to variables, often expressed as linear inequalities.
Feasible Region The intersection of the graphs in a system of constraints.
Bounded A region is bounded when the graph of a system of constraints is a polygonal region.
Vertices The minimum or maximum value that a linear function has for the points in a feasible region.
Unbounded A system of inequalities that forms a region that is open.
Linear Programming The process of finding the maximum or minimum values of a function for a region defined by inequalities.
Ordered triple The solution of a system of equations in three variables, x, y, and z.
Octants Regions where three coordinate planes intersect.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
