What are the five bases of power? Referent, Expert, Legitimate, Reward & Coercive
What is referent power? Based on followers' identification and liking for the leader. A teacher who is adored by students has referent power.
What is expert power? Based on followers' perceptions of the leader's competence. A tour guide who is knowledgeable about a foreign country has expert power.
What is legitimate power? Associated with having status or formal job authority. A judge who administers sentences in the courtroom exhibits legitimate power.
What is reward power? Derived from having the capacity to provide rewards to others. A supervisor who gives rewards to employees who work hard is using reward power.
What is coercive power? Derived from having the capacity to penalize or punish others. A coach who sits players on the bench for being late to practice is using coercive power.
What are the types and bases of power? There is position power and personal power. Position power includes: legitimate, reward and coercive. Personal power includes: referent and expert.
Difference between management & leadership Management produces order and consistency, leadership produces change and movement
What are the foundations of leadership? Sociology, affect, psychology
What are two evolutionary theories of leadership? Byproduct dominance and leadership as strategy of social coordination
What is theory of byproduct dominance? Competes for scare resources, whoever occupies the top of the hierarchy will become the leader. Advantages: parsimonious (frugal with resources). Disadvantages: some leaders are "dominant" & "controlling"
What is theory of leadership as strategy of social coordination? Based on "evolutionary game theory", based on gains of the leader and follower, equilibrium occurs when each individual has no gains to move into a different setting. Advantages: less chaos, more coordination & overall higher performance
Components of leadership? Process, influence (you are a good leader when you can influence followers, not order them around), occurs in a group context
What are the different leadership types? Trait v Process and Assigned v Emergent
What is the difference between the trait and process leadership types? Trait possess the traits of a leader vs. process who just practice the behaviors of a leader
What is the difference between the assigned and emergent types of leadership? Assigned has legitimate power vs. emergent who evolved into position (non-formal)
What are the different views of leadership? Trait-based, skill-based, and behavior-based.
Issues in leadership? Gender discrimination, generational differences, etc.
