WordDefinition
groundwater Water found underneath the earth’s surface, contained in aquifers and in underground lakes and rivers.
permeable An earth material or other substance that allows the flow of water or other liquids. For a rock to be permeable it must contain pores that are connected to provide a path for the liquid to flow.
porous Earth materials that contain pores or holes and are capable of being permeated by water or other liquids.
groundwater movement Movement of groundwater through sediments in aquifers and between aquitards. Groundwater can also move by infiltration through the unsaturated zone which is not an aquifer or aquitard.
aquifer Earth materials that contain groundwater and through which groundwater may flow freely. some examples of these include sand, porous sandstone, and gravel. Aquifers vary widely in their ability to hold water and the speed at which water flows through t
aquitards Earth materials such as clay or low permeability rocks that retard or completely block the flow of water.
surface water Water found on the surface of the earth, including lakes, rivers, oceans, puddles, streams, and water in the atmosphere.
contaminate To make impure or pollute by various means.
