Elements of Fiction and Plot details

QuestionAnswer
Protagonist is the central character in the story, may be good or bad
Antagonist is the person, thing, or force that works against the protagonist
Authors Purpose An authors reason for creating a particular work is called the authors purpose, there are three
Character Is a person, animal, or imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a story.
Dialogue the words that characters speak
Dialect is a form of language that is spoken in a particular place or by a particular group of people
Genre is the nameused to identify the category or type of literature
Mood Is the feeling that you have when reading a literary work.
Point Of View The perspective , or vantage point from which an author presents a story.
Setting When and where a story takes place.
Style Is the way the writer expresses their ideas.
Symbol Is something concrete – such as a person, place, or object that means something more than just itself.
Theme Is the writers message, or the main point.
Plot The action of a story, there are five parts.
Expositon background is given about the setting and the main characters situation.
Rising Action characters try to solve a problem or conflict, but the situation usually gets worse before the problem is solved.
Climax the situation reaches a critical point. The tension that has been building reaches a peak.
Falling Action tension decreases as the conflict begins to be settled.
Resolution the solution to the problem occurs at the story’s end.
