What might explain why the vikings felt the need to go raid the rest of Europe? A climate shift occurred making the temperature warmer, farmers grew more food; more people survived; populations grew; there was not enough land to go around
How did Charlemagne encourage learning? He built monasteries to continue education/preservation of knowledge; scholarly monks copied books and scrolls and taught skills and trades.
How did Charlemagne unify religious belief in Europe? He made sure religious ceremonies carried out in the same way throughout Europe, he forced clergymen to become educated and made sure Church officials were not corrupt.
How were peasants expected to behave? Peasant were expected to work hard, but not too hard, to be sneaky and dishonest about how much food they'd grown, as well as being likely cowards.
How were knights expected to behave? Knights were expected to be tough, willing and able to act violently, and loyal to their superiors.
What is a fief? It is a large area of land given to a noble or knight in exchange for their services.
What modern European countries were formed out of Charlemagne's empire? Germany, France, and Italy
Why did Iceland get its name? Vikings tried to trick other people into not going there.
Why did Greenland get it's name? Vikings tried to trick people into going there.
Why was the Battle of Tours considered an important event in world history? If Charles Martel did not defeat the Muslim armies, then Europe would have not continued to practice Christianity. Christianity would not have the spread to the America's and the rest of the world.
How did Charlemagne bring order to Europe? He defeated many of the competing barbarian tribes so the fighting decreased. He encouraged learning and unified religious belief.
