5th Grade Math Vocabulary - Probability (sheet from teacher)

QuestionAnswer
probability the likelihood that an event will happen
prediction a reasonable guess to the outcome of an event
outcomes a possible result of an experiment
experimental probability the ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials or times the activity is performed
event a set of outcomes
equally likely having the same chance of occurring
sample space the set of all possible outcomes
theoretical probability a comparison of the number of favorable outcomes to the number of possible equally likely outcomes. This is a mathematical calculation.
trial a single event
tree diagram an organized list that shows all possible outcomes for an event
combination a choice in which the order of the items does not matter
arrangement an ordering of items
likely having a greater than even chance of happening
unlikely having a less than even chance of happening
impossible having no chance of happening
median the middle number in a set of data that have been ordered
mode the most repeated number in a set of data
range the difference between the largest and the smallest number in a set of data
frequency table a table that uses numbers to record data about how often something happens
