Question | Answer |
---|---|
what is a solid? | a solid is the state of matter in which materials have a definite shape and a definite volume. |
what is a liquid? | is a the state of matter in which a material has a definte volume but not a definite shape |
what is a gas? | gas is the state of matter in which a material has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume |
what is kinetic energy? | kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to its motion. |
pressure | is the result of a force distributed over an area |
absolute zero | a temerture of 0 kelvins |
charles law | the direct proportion of the volume of a gas to its temerature(in kelins) if the pressure and the number of particles of the gas are constant |
boyles law | the inverse variation of the volume of a gas with its presure if the temputure and the number of particles are constant |
phase change | is the reversible physical change that occurs when a substace changes from one state of matter to another |
endothermic | the system absords energy from its surrounding |
heat of fusion | fusion is anthor term for melting. the heat of fusion varies from substance to substane |
exothermic | the system release energy to its surroundings |
vaporization | the phase change in which a substance changes from a liquid into a gas |
heat of vaporization | this amount of energy is the heat of vaporization for water |
evaporation | is the process that changes a substanes from a liquid to a gas at tempures below the substance boiling point |
vapor pressure | the vapor presure of water increases as the temperature increases |
condensation | is the phase change in which a substanes changes fromm a gas or vapor to a liquid |
sublimation | is the phase change in which a substane change from a soild to a gas or vapot with out changing to a liquid first |
deposition | when a gas or vapor changes directly into a soild without first changing to a liquid the phase change is called deposition |
