cytoplasm the region of the cell that is within the plasma membrane
nucleus membrane-bound structure; contains a cell's DNA
prokaryotes organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
eukaryotes organisms made up of one or more cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
organelles well-defined, intracellular bodies that perform
tissue a group of similar cells and their products that carry out a specific function
organ system a group of organs that accomplish related tasks
phospholipid bilayer double layer
chromosomes structures in nucleus that make DNA an protein
nuclear envelope made up of two phospholopid bilayers
nucleolus the site in which DNA is concentrated when it is in the process of making ribosomal RNA
Ribosomes organelles made of protein and RNA that direct protein synthesis in the cytoplasm
mitochondria are tiny organelles that transfer engergy from organic molecules to adenosine triphosphate
endoplasmic reticulum is a system of membranous tubs and sacs
golgi apparatus another system of flattened, membranous sacs
lysosomes vesicles that bud from the Golgi apparatus and that contain digestive enzymes
cytoskeleton a network of thin tubes and filaments that crisscrosses the cytosol
microtubules hollow tubesmade of a protein called tubulin
microfilaments long threads of the beadlike protein actin and are linked end to end and wrapped around each other like two strand of a rope
cilia a hairlike structure arranged in tightly packed rows that projects fro mthe surgace of some cells
flagella a long, hairlike structure that grows out of a cell and enables the cell to move
centrioles an organelle that is composed of two short microtubules at right angles to each other and that has an active site role in mitosis
cell wall a rigid layer that lies outsie the cell's plasma membrane
central vacuole a large, fluid-filled organellethat stores not only water but also enzymes
plastids organelles that are surrounded by a double membrane and contain their won DNA
thylakoids a system of flattened, membranous sacs

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.
