Proportions Vocab

Vocabulary words from the proportions unit.

TermDefinition
Ratio A comparison of two numbers by division.
Rate A ratio of two numbers with different units.
Unit Rate A rate with a denominator of 1.
Proportion An equation which states that two ratios are equal.
Cross Product For a proportion ( a/b=c/d ), ad = cb is the cross product.
Similar Figures Two figures that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size.
Scale Drawing Enlarged or reduced drawing that is similar to an actual object or place.
Scale Ratio of the distance in the drawing or model or the distance of the actual object.
Percentage of Change/Increase/Decrease A ratio of the amount of change to the original amount expressed as a percent. This can be an increase or a decrease.
Greatest Possible Error When taking measurements the greatest possible error is ½ the unit of measurement.
Percent Error A ratio of the greatest possible error to the length of the measurement represented as a percent.
Probability How likely it is that something will occur, written as P(x) where x is the event.
Outcome Result of a single trial.
Event A desired outcome or group of outcomes.
Sample Space All the possible outcomes.
Theoretical Probability Ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the number of possible outcomes.
Compliment of an Event All of the possible outcomes that are not part of the event.
Experimental Probability Ratio of the number times your event occurs to the number of the time the experiment is done.
Independent Event Events that do not influence one another.
Dependent Event Events that influence each other.
