Chapter 2 Vocab

QuestionAnswer
What does the word opposite mean? (math) The opposite of a number is the same distance from zero as the original number on a number line.
What is an integer? The integers are the set of whole numbers and their opposites.
What is absolute value? A number's absolute value is its distance from zero on a number line.
What is a prime number? A prime number is whole number that has only two factors, one and itself.
What is a composite number? A composite number is a whole number that has more than two factors.
What is greatest common factor? The greatest common factor of two of more whole number is the greatest whole number that divides evenly into each number.
What is a multiple? A multiple of a number is the product of that number and a nonzero whole number.
What is least common multiple? The least common multiple of a number is the multiple with least value.
What is an equivalent fraction? Equivalent fractions are different expressions for the same nonzero number.
What are improper fractions? You have an improper fraction when your numerator is bigger than you denominator.
What is a mixed number? A mixed number contains both a fraction and a whole number.
