Cell cycle The steps a cell goes through to grow, prepare for division, and divide to form two daughter cells.
Mitosis Part of eukaryotic cell division during which the cell nucleus divides.
Asexual reproduction Process of reproduction involving a single parent that results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent.
Somatic cell A body cell.
Centriole Structure in an animal cell that helps with cell division.
Spindle Fiber Structure that separates the chromosomes into 2 daughter cells during cell division.
Chromosome Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contains genetic information. In eukaryotes, they are found in the nucleus.
Chromatid One of two parts of a chromosome.
Centromere Region of a chromosome where the two sister chromatids attach.
Chromatin Substance found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones.
Nuclear membrane Controls what moves in and out of the nucleus.
Interphase Period of the cell cycle between cell division.
Prophase First and longest phase of mitosis in which the genetic material inside the nucleus condenses and the chromosomes become visible.
Metaphase Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up across the middle of the cell.
Anaphase Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move away to opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase Phase of mitosis in which individual chromosomes begin to spread out into a tangle of chromatin.
Cytokinesis Division of the cytoplasm to form 2 separate daughter cells.
