Downwelling | The movement of water from the surface to greater depths. |
Continental shelf | Flat gently sloping land submerged around continent & extends from shoreline to continental slope. |
Rip current | A narrow stream of water that breaks through sandbars and drains rapidly back into deeper water. |
Tide | Periodic rising & falling of the water level of the ocean due to the gravitational pulls of the Moon & the Sun. |
Tidal range | The difference in height between high tide and low tide. |
Spring tide | A tide of large range occurring during the new and full moons |
El Nino | A disturbance of wind patterns & ocean currents in the Pacific Ocean that causes temporary climate changes. |
Density | Property of matter representing the mass per unit volume. |
Ocean current | A mass of moving ocean water. |
