solids and liquid


emulsion a mixture of fats or oils in water. EX soyacol
liniment a drug combined with oil, soap, alcohol, or water. are applied externally, using friction, to produce a feeling of heat or warmth. EX heat liniment
lotion an aqueous preparation that contains suspended ingredients. are used to treat external skin conditions they work to soothe, protect, and moisten the skin and to destroy harmful bacteria
solution a liquid preparation that contains one or more completely dissolved substance. the dissolved substance is known as the solute, and the liquid in which it is dissolved is known as the solvent
spirit a drug combined with an alcoholic sloution that is volatile ( a substance that is volatile evaporates readily)
spray a fine stream of medicated vapor, usually used to treat nose and throat condition.
suspension a pressurized form in which solid aerosol or liquid drug particles are suspended in a gas to be dispensed in a cloud of mist
suspension a drug contains solid insoluble drug particles in a liquid the preparation must be shaken before administration

chewing tablets a powdered drug that has been flavored and pressed into a disc. chewable tablets are often used for antacids, antiflatulents.and the children medication
sublingual tablets a powdered drug that has been pressed into a disc and is disigned to dissolve under the tounge which permits its rapid absorption into the bloodstream.
enteric coated tablets a tablet coated with a substance that prevents it from dissolving until it reached the intestine the coating protect the drug from being destroyed by gastric juices and prevent it from irritating the stomach lining
capsule a drug contained in a gelatin capsule that is water soluble and functions to prevent the pt from tasting the drug
sustained release capsule a capsule that contains granules that dissoves at diffrent rates to provide a gradual and continuous release of medication
caplet a drug contained in a oblong tablet with smooth coating to make swallowing easier
lozenge a drug contained in a candylike base. lozenges are circular and designed to dissolve on the tongue.
cream a drug combined ina base that is generally nongreasy , resulting ina semisolid prep creams are applied externally to the skin
ointment a drug with a oil base resulting in a simisolid prep are applied externally to the skin and are usually greasy
suppository a drug mixed with a firm base, such as coco butter that is designed to melt at body temp. is shaped into a sylinder to cone for easy inserton
transdermal patch a patch with an adhesive backing with contains a drug that is applied to the skin the drug enters the circlation after being absorbed through the skin
elixir a drug that is dissolved in solution of alcohol and water. Elixers are sweetended and flavored and are taken orally. EX
