Layers & Plates

A list of words dealing with the layers of the earth and plate tectonics

QuestionAnswer
The inner most layer of the Earth. Inner Core
The hottest layer of the Earth. Inner Core
The solid portion of the core, made of iron and nickel. Inner Core
The liquid portion of the core, made of iron and nickel. Outer Core
The thickest layer of the Earth. Mantle
The outermost layer of the Earth. Crust
The theory that states the idea that Earth's crust is made up of large floating slabs that move above Earth's mantle. Theory of Plate Tectonics
The large floating slabs of the Earth's crust that move above the Earth's mantle. Tectonic Plates
The heat transfer that occurs within the mantle when magma heated from the core rises then cools and sinks again. Convection
A region where two or more tectonic plates move toward one another and collide. Earthquakes and volcanoes are common at these boundaries. Convergent Boundaries
A plate boundary that exists where two tectonic plates are moving apart. Mid-oceanic ridges and volcanic islands are common at these boundaries. Divergent Boundaries
A plate boundary that exists where two tectonic plates are sliding past one another. Earthquakes are common at these boundaries. Transform Boundaries
The process that takes place at convergent boundaries where one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate and sinks into the mantle as the plates come together. Subduction
An opening in the Earth's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from below the surface (the mantle). Volcano
The sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that causes the earth's crust to shake. Earthquake
A series of water waves caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other underwater explosions. Tsunami
This depression (dent) forms where two plates are converging and one plate is moving beneath the other. Trench
An underwater mountain system caused by two tectonic plates moving apart (diverging). Magma from the mantle comes through the crack in the crust and forms into new land. Ridge

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
