civil liberties the freedoms we have to think and to act without government interference.
censorship cannot ban printed materials or films merely because they contain alarming or offensive ideas.
petition a formal request.
slander sreading spoken lies.
libel spoken lies that are printed.
search warrant a court order allowing law enforcement officers to search a suspects house or business.
indictment a formal charge by a group of citizens.
grand jury reviews evidence against people accused of indictment.
double jeopardy people who are accused of a crime and judged not guilty may not be put on trail again for the same crime.
due process following established legal procedures.
eminent domain the right of the government to take private property.
bail a sum of money used as a security deposit
suffrage the right to vote
poll taxes they reuired voters to pay a sum of money before casting a ballot.
discrimination unfair treatment based on prejudice against a certain group.
segregation the social seperation of the races.
civil rights the rights of full citizenship and equallity under the law.
affermative action programs to try to make up past discrimination.
racial profiling being singled out as suspects because because of the way they look.
