Biomes

biome vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
ocean The body of salt water that covers more than two thirds of earth.
tundra Large area of frozen, treeless ground, with little rainfall.
taiga An area with long, cold winters, and short, cool summers.
temperate forest An area of cold winters, warm summers, and moderate rainfall. They are generally located in middle latitudes.
grassland An area with very cold winters, very hot and dry summers. Generally there is little to moderate rainfall.
rain forest An area located near the equator, with hot, humid and rainy conditions. The temperature is constant.
desert An area with hot, dry days, little to no rainfall, and cool nights.
biome geographical areas filled with a major community
estuary an ecosystem in which fresh water mixes with salt water from the ocean.
wetlands areas of land that are covered with water for at least part of the year.
benthic zone bottom of a body of water; inhabited by decomposers, insect larvae, and clams
canopy the coverings of tall trees whose intertwining branches absorb a great amount of sunlight and shade the area underneath
Drought-resistant characteristic of a plant that allsos it ot survive in areas of little rainfall
chapparal coastal biome with a Mediterranean climate and low-lying vegetation
littoral zone the shallow-water area near the shores of lakes and ponds where sunlight reaches the bottom
savanna tropical grasland biome with a short rainy season.
permafrost permanently frozen soil a few inches below the active soil in tundra biomes
coral reef limestone islands in the sea built by coral animals
latitude The distance a region is either north or south from the equator.
equator An imaginary line around the earth, equally distant from both the north pole and south pole.
Temperate Forest This biome contains trees growing close together, creating a shady place protected from strong winds and providing much food and shelter. These places have seasons and enough rain to support the large trees.
Grassland This biome is too dry for many trees to grow but there is enough rain for grass to grow. Small animals live under the ground for shelter. Larger animals live in a herd for protection against predators. This is a wide open space.
Desert This biome is very dry. Plants and animals must learn to live without water for long periods. It can be very hot in the daytime and cold at night. Most animals burrow under the ground during the day and come out at night to hunt or forage for food.
Tropical Forest These forests are close to the equator and it is warm or hot all of the time. Trees grow very close together along with many other plants and vines. There is an amazing number of life-forms in this biome. They must compete for space by finding a niche
Tropical Forest or special place for their species. Some animals live in the tree canopy and never touch the ground. Tropical rainforests here have rain almost daily. Tropical dry forests have wet and dry seasons.
Wetlands These are low lying. This biome is flooded with water for most or all of the time. The plants can grow in the water. This biome includes swamps with trees or marshes with grass. It can be fresh water or salt water.
Mountains This biome is colder than areas of a lower altitude. Above a certain height, trees do not grow and the soil is very steep and rocky. Plants find pockets of soil in which to grow. There are places where snow never melts.
Polar Regions This biome is close to the poles and far from the equator. It is very cold here with a very short summer. The ground can be permanently frozen so that no trees can grow here. Animals either hibernate or migrate during the long winter.
Ocean This biome is underwater. The water has salt in it. The plants that grow here are adapted to salt water. Microscopic algae and plankton are at the bottom of the food chain. Animals can swim or move with the currents. Many invertebrates and fish live here.
Ocean Some mammals come to the surface for air.
Grassland There is little protection from wind and cold above the ground.
