Internal Conflict (Person vs. Self) | A conflict created when a character must make a difficult decision |
External Conflict | A conflict caused by an outside force |
Person vs. Person | Conflict between two people- argument or fight |
Person vs. Fate | Person has a conflict facing his/her destiny |
Person vs. Society | 1 person in conflict against a group |
Person vs. Nature | A person in a conflict with any force of nature (weather, animals, death...) |
Plot | Sequence of events |
Exposition | All background information is given- setting characters, etc. |
Narrative Hook | Main problem/ conflict is revealed |
Climax | Point of highest interest; the turning point; the protagonist must make a decision |
Conclusion | Resolution; ending |
Narrator | "Person" telling the story- not necessarily the author |
Tone | Narrator/ Author's attitude towards the story |
Point of View | Relationship between the author and the reader (How is the story told?) |
1st person | Narrator is part of the story (he, she, we, I) |
3rd Limited | The narrator tells the story from 1 characters view |
3rd Omniscient | All knowing narrator; not bound by time or place |
Characters | "People" in the story |
Major Character | Main/Most important characters |
Protagonist | The character that the story is mostly about; the good guy |
Antagonist | The character who is against the protagonist; the bad guy |
Minor Character | "Supporting Characters" |
Dynamic Character | A character who changes in a story |
Static Character | A character who does not change in a story |
Indirect Characterization | Personality is revealed (shown) by thoughts and actions |
Symbol | Something that represents/ stands for something else |
Irony | Difference between appearance and reality |
Foreshadowing | Hints about what might happen later in a story |
Suspense | Quality in a story that keeps you interested |
Flashback | Narrator tells about something that happened in the past. |
Simile | Comparison of 2 unalike things using 'like' or 'as'; direct comparison |
Metaphor | Comparison of 2 unalike things by saying 1 IS the other; indirect comparison |
Personification | Non human/inanimate objects; human abilities/traits |
