Describe the method of recognizing patterns. | Method by which the physician rapidly arrives at a diagnosis or limited DDx because clinical picture looks exactly like something seen before. .. looks, sounds and smells like a duck.. |
Describe sampling the universe. | exhaustive method that uses idea that if you keep running enough tests, eventually you will run one that gives correct diagnosis. Usually reserved for unusual/complex cases b/c inefficient, time consuming & expensive. |
Describe the use of algorithms. | consistent logical method, does not vary from pt to pt, flow chart of symptoms & procedures |
Describe hypothesis generation & testing. | gather info from history & physical & labs. Then organize and analyze info, then make judgements on data & use our knowledge to create hypothesis. |
Describe decision analysis. | uses the probability of a pt having a disease (sensitivity) vs not having a disease (specificity) based on clinical findings |
Describe Baye's theorem. | probability of findings being associated with a diagnosis and the prevalence of the diagnosis in the community |
describe utility | worth or value of outcome measured in $ or subjective (ie value to pt or society) |
what is the importance of pt rapport? what are ways to build rapport | a good rapport builds trust with pt. some examples are having a good appearance (tie, white coat, etc), showing: empathy respect concern kindness sincerity confidentiality good communication |
what is the importance of appearance, attitude, caring, confidentiality, communication, and preservation of pt dignity & how do they relate to development of rapport | these affect the patient's confidence and attitude towards you and lead to the pt trusting you and putting the patients best interest first |
