Fowler's position | Sitting - used for exam treatment of the head, neck and chest or for patients with orthopnea (difficulty breathing lying flat) |
Semi-fowlers position | Table is positioned s to the patient is lying back at 45 degree angle, used for exam treatment of the head, neck and chest or for patients with orthopnea (difficulty breathing lying flat) |
Supine (Horizontal recumbent)position | Lying flat on back for exams of the front of the body. |
Dorsal recumbent position | Lygin on back with knees flexed so that feet are flat on the table. For relief of muscle tension in abdomen or low back. For exams of abdomen, digital exam of rectum and vagina, perineal area. |
Lithotomy position | Lying on back with knees flexed and feet in the stirrups, buttocks at edge of exam table. Used for vaginal and rectal exams. |
Sim's position (also called lateral position) | Patient lying on left side, left arm behind back, right arm flexed for support, right leg flexed and drawn up sharply. Used for rectal exam, administration of rectal medications and enemas, perineal exam. |
Prone position | Lying on stomach arms under head that is turned to the side. Used for exams of the back of the body (dorsal side) |
Knee-chest position | Patient is on knees with chest dropped to the table. Used for sigmoid, rectal and vaginal exams. Use extreme caution placing patient in position as well as maintaining and getting out of position. It is unstable position and may cause dizziness. |
Trendelenburg position | Position in which the knees or feet are placed at a higher elevation than the head. May be called shock position. Used to deliver blood flow to the head. |
