MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY (a.k.a. centers of data) | Numbers that can be used to represent a group of data. | mean, median, mode |
MEAN | The average of all the numbers in a set of data. (i.e. The sum of items in a data set divided by the number of data items.) | For {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}: (1+2+3+4+5)/5 = 3; 3 is the mean |
MEDIAN | The middle number (or the average of the two middle numbers) of a set of data when the numbers are listed in order. | For {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}: 3 is in the middle, so it is the median. For {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}: 3 and 4 are in the middle, (3 + 4)/2 = 3.5, so 3.5 is the median. |
MODE | The number in a set of data that occurs the most often in a data set. | For {1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5}: 3 is the mode because it occurs the most often. |
MEASURES OF SPREAD | Numbers that show how a group of data is distributed. | range, five-number summary, interquartile range |
RANGE | The difference between the highest and lowest numbers of a set of data. | For {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}: 1 is the lowest number, 5 is the highest number, 5-1 = 4, so 4 is the range. |
FIVE-NUMBER SUMMARY | A list of the five numbers that separate a set of data into four equal groups (quarters). These numbers are the low, first quartile, median (second quartile), third quartile, and high. | For {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}: 1 = low, 10 = high, (5+6)/2 = 5.5, so 5.5 = median. To the left of 5.5 are 5 numbers, 3 is in the middle, so 3 = 1st quartile. To the right of 5.5, 8 is in the middle, so 8 = 3rd quartile. FNS = 1, 3, 5.5, 8, 10 |
