Fertility Rate | number of births per 1000 of the population. (Total no. of births/Total population) x 1000 |
Mortality Rate | number of deaths per 1000 of the population (crude death rate). (Total no. of deaths/Total population) x 1000 |
Underpopulation | Where a population is too small to fully exploit it's resources. |
Overpopulation | Where there are too few resources for the population size. |
Optimum Population | A theoretical situation where the size of the population is suited to the available resources. |
Population Momentum | The tendency for a population to continue growing, even after reaching replacement level. |
Replacement Level | The fertility rate required for the older generations to be replaced by the younger. Now around 2.1 children per woman. |
Ageing Population | A population with a high proportion of elderly dependants and a low proportion of youthful dependants. |
Youthful Population | A population with a high proportion of youthful dependants and a low proportion of elderly dependants. |
