TermMeaning
acceleration any change in an object's speed or direction of motion
amplitude in a wave, the distance between its crest (high point) and its midpoint
circuit a complete path along which electric current flows
diffraction the spreading of a wave after the wave passes through a gap in a barrier
electricity a flow of charged particles, usually electrins
electromagnetic radiation a wave of motion of electric and magnetic fields; for example, visible light, radio waves, and X rays
energy the ability to do work; see work
force the pushes and pulls that act on matter; for example, gravity
frequency the number of waves that pass a given point in a given time
heat a form of energy that is transfered from one object to another when there is a difference in temperature
inertia the tendency of an object at rest to remain at rest and the tendency of an object in motion to remain in motion unless acted upon by force
kinetic energy the energy of an object in motion
machine a device that changes the amount of force used to do a given amount of work, usually by increasing the distance invoved
magnetism force that results from the movement of electric charges
mass the amount of matter an object contains
fission process of splitting the nucleus of an atom into two smaller nuclei
potential energy the energy of an object at rest
reflection the bouncing of a wave off a surface
refraction the bending of a wave when it passes from one substance to another
wave a disturbance or displacement that repeats itself
wavelength the distance between two consecutive waves
work in physics, work is done when an object on which a force is acting moves in the direction of that force
