myocardial infarction | heart attack |
atherosclerosis | hardening of the arteries due to plaque build-up |
ischemia | lack of blood supply |
hypoxia | shortage of oxygen |
angina pectoris | chest pain due to oxygen shortage in the heart |
embolism | when an object migrates from one part of the body to another and causes blockage in a blood vessel |
occlusion | blockage |
thromboembolism | general term describing both thrombosis and its main complication embolisation |
coagulation | clotting of blood |
hemostasis | cessation of blood loss from a damaged vessel |
lumen | interior of a blood vessel; inner membrane space of a chloroplast, golgi apparatus, or mitochondrion |
arteries | bring oxygenated blood to tissues |
capillaries | connect arterioles and venules; blood vessels that most closely interact with tissues |
veins | bring deoxygenated blood back to the heart |
arterioles | extends and branches out from an artery and leads to capillaries |
venules | allows deoxygenated blood to return from the capillary beds to veins |
endothelium | layer of thin specialized epithelium, comprised of a simple squamous layer of cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels |
