Element | Description |
theme | underlying message in a story; the lesson the story teaches about life. |
plot | It is the sequence of events in a story or play. The plot is a planned, logical series of events having a beginning, middle, and end. |
characters | the individuals or animals/things who take part in the story and the story is about |
setting | The time and location in which a story takes place . |
conflict | the problem in the story...all stories have a conflict |
rising action | This is where the events in the story become complicated /conflict is revealed. |
climax/turning point | This is the highest point of interest and the turning point of the story. The big event in a story. |
falling action | The events and complications begin to resolve themselves. |
resolution | how the problem is solved |
point of view | whose voice tells the story or gives us the crucial information we need to understand what is happening |
protagonist | The main character who is usually, but not always a "good guy" |
antagonist | The character who opposes or works against the main character/protagonist and is usually a"bad guy" or force |
foreshadowing | a hint about what will happen later in the story |
introduction (also called exposition) | The beginning of the story where the characters and the setting is revealed. |
Internal conflict | the problem that is going on inside a character’s thoughts (man vs. himself). |
External conflict | a problem that occurs outside of the characters control (man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. society). |
Man vs nature | A person in conflict with the elements of nature |
Man vs society | A person in conflict with a set of rules in a community |
Man vs self | A person in conflict with himself |
First person point of view | Tells only one persons actions and feelings. Uses I, me, we us. |
Third person objective point of view | A narrator only tells you about what one person does and says |
Third person limited point of view | A narrator can see into the mind of one character only |
Third person omniscient point of view | A narrator knows can see into the minds on multiple or all characters. |
Man vs man | A person or animal in conflict with another person or animal |
Characteristics | descriptions of how the character looks (age, height, color, clothing, features, etc.) |
Character Traits | how a character acts (nice, mean, helpful, curious, brave, etc.) |
