Additive Inverses | Two numbers whose sum is 0; opposites |
Algebraic expression | A name for a number that contains a variable |
area | The measure of the interior of a closed boundary |
Common denominator | Any nonzero number that is a multiple of the denominators of both fractions |
Consecutive | Following one another in an uninterrupted order |
Constant | A number which never changes |
Coordinate | A number used to locate a point on a number line, the ordered pair used to locate a point on an x-y graph |
Corresponding sides | Any pair of sides in the same relative postion in two figures |
Distributive property | A property that relates two operations on numbers; usually multiplication and addition |
Equation | A mathematical sentence that states the equality of two expressions |
Equivalent | Equal in value, but in a diffferent form |
Exponent | A small, raised number that indicates how many times the base is a factor |
Greatest common factor | The largest factor that two or more numbers have in common |
Improper fraction | A fraction whose numerator is equal to or greater than its denominator |
Integer | Any whole number or its opposite |
Irrational numbers | Numbers that cannot be written as fractions where both the numerator and denominator are integers and the denominator are integers and the denominator is not zero |
Multiplicative Inverses | Two numbers whose product is 1 |
Origin | The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect |
Pi | The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter |
Place value | The value of a digit in a number as determined by its position |
Ratio | A comparison of two quantities with like units |
Rational number | Any number that can be represented by a terminating or repeating decimal |
Scale drawing | An accurate picture of an object in which all parts are drawn to the same scale; (proportion) |
Simplify | To rewrite an expression following the orders of operations and combining like terms |
Whole number | 0 and the positive integers |
