Alimentary Canal | a long, muscular tube that begins at the mouth and includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus |
Mouth | also knwon as the buccal cavity, recieves food as it enters the body |
Teath | special structures in the mouth that phisically breaks down food by chewing and grinding |
Tongue | muscular organ that contains special receptors called taste buds |
Hard Palate | the bony structure that forms the roof of the mouth and seperates the mouth from the nasal cavities |
Soft Palate | seperates the mouth from the nasophaynx |
Salivary Glands | partoid, sublingiual, and submandibular, produce a liquid called saliva |
Pharynx (throat) | a tube that carries both air and food. caries the air into the trachea, and food to the esophagus |
Esophagus | muscular tube dorsal to the trachea. it recives the bolus from the pharynx and carries the bolus to the stomach |
Peristalsis | to move food in a forward direction |
Stomach | enlarged part of the aligmentary canal. Recives food from the esophagus |
Samll Intestine | coiled section of the aimentary canal. Divided into 3 sections: duodeum, jejunum, and iileum (appt. 20 feet) |
Duodenum | 1st 9-10in of small intestine, bile and paincreatic jucies enter this section through ducts, or tubes |
Jejunum | appx. 8ft in legnth and forms the middle section of the small intestine |
Ileum | final 12ft of small intestine that connects with large intestine at ceum |
Villi | finger like projections that contain blood capillaries and lacterals |
Large Intestine | final section of the alimentary canal. Absorbs water and any remaning nutrients, stores indegistive materiels before they are eliminated from the bidy, synthesis and absorbs some B complex and vitamins and vitamin K by bacteria present in the intestine |
Vermiform Appendix | small projection in Cecum |
Colon | split in 7 parts and has an ascending, transvers, desecinding, and sigmoid section. |
Rectum | 8in of large intestine and is the storage area for indigestible and wastes contains an anal canal which opens to the anus |
Anus | expells fecal material, or stool, and final waste product of the digestive process |
Liver | largest gland in the body and is an accesory organ to the digestuve system, located under the diaphragm and in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. secerts bile |
Gallblader | small muscular sac located under the liver and attached by connective tissue. it stores and concentrates bile, which it recives from the liver |
Pancreas | glandular organ located behind the stomach. it produces pancreatic jucies which contain enzymes to digest food |
