Normal Flora | Non-pathogenic organisms that are part of the body and beneficial to us. |
Pathogen | Microorganisms that cause infection and disease-germs. |
Aerobic | Require oxygen to live. |
Anaerobic | Do not require oxygen to live. |
Nosocomial | Means the infection occured inside a hospital or health care facility. |
Asepsis | Absence of disease producing organsims. |
Sterile | Free of all organsisms including spores and viruses-no germs. |
Contaminated | Means organisms and pathogens are present. |
Disinfection | Process that destroys or kills pathogenic organisms but is not always effective against spores and viruses. |
PPE | Personal Protective equipment such as gowns,gloves,masks. |
Standard Precautions | Rules developed by the CDC to treat all body fluids as a potential source of infection. |
Prion | A protein particle that is the agent of infection in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases |
Microorganism | Small living organism not visible to the naked eye. |
Bacteria | Simple, one-celled organisms that multiply rapidly and are classified by shape and arrangement. |
Protozoa | One-celled animal-like organsims often found in decayed materials,animal or bird feces,insect bites,and contaminated water. |
Fungi | Simple plant-like organsims that live on dead organic matter. |
Rickettsiae | Parasitic microorgansims which means they cannot live outside the cells of another living organsim. |
Viruses | Smallest microorgansims visible only using an electron microscope. |
Cocci | Round or spherical shaped bacteria |
Diplococci | Cocci that occur in pairs |
Streptococci | Cocci that occur in chains |
Staphylococci | cocci that occur in clusters or groups |
Bacilli | Rod shaped bacteria |
Spirilla | Bacteria that are spiral or corkscrew shaped |
AIDS | Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome |
HIV | Human Immunodeficiency Virus |
