inferior | (below) The abdominal aortic aneurysm lies inferior to the left ventricle. Explanation The shoulders are inferior to the neck. |
lateral | (side of) The patient was placed in left lateral sims position (on the left side). Explanation Lateral means to the side. The arms (appendicular) are lateral to the overall body's structure (axial). |
medial | (middle) The sternum (breastbone) lies medial of the axillary (underarms) regions. Explanation Medial means in the center. |
peripheral | (on the edge of or outside of) The peripheral IV was infiltrated. Explanation Peripheral means on the outer edge. (IVs normally started by nurses are placed in smaller, more distal veins called peripheral veins. The IV is then called a peripheral IV |
posterior | (rear or back of) The entire posterior portion of the hand was red and edematous (swollen). Explanation Posterior means the backside of something and is used anatomically or with objects. |
prone | (lie on the front side facedown) The patient was placed in a prone position for the spinal tap. Explanation Being prone means to lie facedown. |
proximal | (nearest) The patella (kneecap) is located proximal to the femur (long bone of the thigh). Explanation The proximal point is the nearest point to a particular area. |
superior | (above) The superior vena cava empties blood into the right atrium. Explanation Your head is superior to your shoulders. |
supine | (lie on back) The patient was placed in a supine position for the procedure. Explanation To lie in a supine position is to lie on your back |
transverse | (across) The doctor made a transverse incision in preparation for the C-section. Explanation Transverse means to go across, lateral, or side to side. |
