Term | Definition |
atmosphere | the air that surrounds the earth |
hydrosphere | oceans, lakes, rivers and other bodies of water |
lithosphere | the earth’s crust |
biosphere | the part of the earth where life is found |
fold | bends in the layers of rock like when moving plates squeeze the earth’s surface until it buckles. |
fault | breaks in the earth’s crust when the folded land cannot be bent any further. This is how mountains are formed. |
weathering | the process that breaks down rocks |
erosion | the wearing away of the earth’s surface. |
isthmus | a narrow piece of land that connects two land masses. |
plateau | higher than the surrounding land and has at least one steep side called a cliff. |
archipelago | a group of islands |
continental shelf | narrow in some places and wide in others. |
groundwater | water that lies beneath the earth’s surface and supplies wells and springs. |
water cycle | the regular movement of water from ocean to air to ground to ocean. |
evaporation | the changing of water into vapor or gas caused by the sun’s heat. |
natural resource | Elements from the earth that are not made by people but can be used by them. |
renewable resource | If people can replace them naturally or if people can grow or raise continuous supplies of them. |
non renewable resource | resources that can never be replaced. |
imports | resources or goods brought in from another country. |
exports | resources or goods sent from one country to another |
