x-axis | horizontal number line in a coordinate plane |
y-axis | vertical number line in a coordinate plane |
origin | point of intersection of the x- and y-axes in a coordinate plane |
rectangular coordinate system | Cartesian coordinate system |
x-y plane | plane formed by the x- and y-axes |
coordinate axes | the x- and y-axes |
to plot | to place a dot at the location of a point |
abscissa | the x-coordinate |
x-coordinate | the signed distance of point P from the y-axis |
ordinate | the y-coordinate |
y-coordinate | the signed distance of point P from the x-axis |
quadrant | one of the four sections into which a coordinate plane is divided |
pixel | one of the small rectangles into which a screen is divided |
setting the range (on a calculator) | setting the scale on each axis and including the smallest and largest values of x and y to be shown in the WINDOW or viewing rectangle |
time series data | data in which a variable is measured at different points in time. It is represented graphically by line graphs |
relation | a correspondence between 2 variables, and can be written as an ordered pair |
scatter diagram | the graph resulting from plotting ordered pairs in a Cartesian coordiante system |
distance formula | sqroot[(x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)^2] |
midpoint formula | the ordered pair obtained by averaging the x-coordinates and the y-coordinates of the endpoints ((x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2) |
