Term | Definition |
origin | The point (0,0) where the two axes of a coordinate grid meet. The 0 point on a number line. |
order of operations | The agreed upon order in which the operations should be performed within an expression. |
4-quadrants | Any of the 4 equal areas made by dividing a plane by an X and Y axis. |
algebra | The brand of mathematics that uses letters and symbols to stand for quantities that are unknown or vary. |
open sentence | A number sentence which has variables or missing numbers and is neither true nor false. |
base 10 | Our system for writing numbers that uses only 10 symbols called digits, The digits are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. You can write any number using these digits. |
rule | A set of instructions about what should be done in a given set of circumstances. |
equilateral triangle | A triangle with all three sides equal in length. Also, all three angles have the same measure. |
isosceles triangle | A triangle with at least two sides equal in length. |
parallelogram | A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. Opposite sides are congruent and opposite angles have the same measure. |
vertex | The point where the sides of an angle, the sides of a polygon, or the edges of a polyhedron meet. |
intersect | Lines that cross at one point. |
scale | A series of marks at regular intervals along a line or curve that helps measure things. Examples: rulers, protractors, coordinate graphs and graphs. |
simplest form | A fraction is in simplest form when the top and the bottom cannot be any smaller. |
percent | A ratio that compares a number to 100. |
