Term | Definition |
right prism | a prism with lateral edges that are also altitudes. |
Oblique prism | if the lateral edges are not perpendicular to the bases. |
right cyclinder | if the axis of a cylinder is also the altitude, then a cylinder is a right cylinder. |
oblique cylinder | if the axis of a cylinder is NOT also the altitude. |
isometric views | corner views of 3-D geometricsolids |
lateral faces | faces that are not bases |
lateral edges | lateral faces intersect at lateral edges, which are parallel and congruent. |
Base edges | the lateral faces intersect at the base at base edges. |
altitude | perpendicular segment that joins the planes of the bases. |
height | length of the altitude. |
lateral area of a prism | the sum of the areas of the lateral faces. |
axis of a cylinder | the segment with endpoints that are centers of the circular bases. |
regular pyramid | base that is a regular polygon and the altitude has an endpoint at the center of the base. |
slant height | the height of each lateral face. |
spherical geometry | geometry on a sphere |
similar solids | have exactly the same shape but not necessarily the same size. |
congruent solids | the same shape and the same size. |
non-Euclidian geometry | geometry in which at least one of the postulates of Euclidean geometry fails. (Example: Parallel Postulate does not hold true on a sphere.) |
