Term | Definition |
Migration | The movement of people from one location to another. |
Voluntary Migration | When people CHOOSE to leave one home and move to another. |
Involuntary Migration | When people are FORCED to leave one home and move to another. |
Urbanization | The trend for people to move from rural areas into cities. |
Infrastructure | The basic structures (for example buildings, roads, and power supplies) needed for the operation of a society. |
Unemployment | When people do not have a job. |
Economic | Factors that cause people to move that are related to how much money a person earns or what kind of job a person has. |
Political | Factors that cause people to move that are related to war and conflict. They may also be related to how a government treats them. |
Cultural | Factors that cause people to move to be nearer to the people or interests that they want to be near. |
Environmental | Factors that cause people to move related to a change in the physical landscape or climate of an area. |
Push Factors | Difficulties that exist in a location that makes someone want to move away. |
Pull Factors | Advantages that exist in a location that makes someone want to move in. |
Refugee | A person who leaves their country to seek safety in another country. |
Asylum | A special protection a government might offer a person from another country if their life is in danger if they return to their homeland. |
IDP | An internally displaced person, or a person who fled their home seeking safety, but did not leave their country. |
Diffusion | The spreading of products and ideas from one culture to another through war, migration, media, or commerce. |
