Question | Answer |
slope y-intercept | y=mx+b |
standard form | Ax+By+C=0 |
slope equation | y2-y1/x2-x1 or for a graph rise/run |
fixed number | y-intercept |
variable number/constant multiple/ constant of variation | slope |
m= | slope |
b= | y-intercept |
horizontal lines | slope is zero, slope in equation is y=0x+b, y=b is the equation |
vertical lines | slope doesn't exist=undefined, can't use slope y-intercept for vertical lines, written in the form x=a where a is the x-intercept |
direct variation | passes through the origin (0,0) y=mx |
partial variation | doesn't pass through the origin (0,0) y=mx+b |
linear | points form a straight line, first differences are constant |
non-linear | points don't form a straight line, first differences aren't constant |
linear system | a set of two or more linear equations that are considered simultaneously |
point of intersection | the point where two (or more) lines cross |
two parallel lines | never cross, no common points, no solution |
two non-parallel lines | intersect at one point, one solution |
two identical lines | equation different but same line, infinite number of solutions |
parallel lines | lines which run in the same direction and never cross |
perpendicular lines | lines which intersect at right angles (90o) |
how to know if two equations are parallel | they have equal slopes |
how to know if two equations are parallel | the slopes are negative reciprocals |
x-intercept | the value of x where the line crosses the x-axis (y=0) |
y-intercept | the value of y where the line crosses the y-axis (x=0) |
