Jurisdiction | The right of a court to hear a case and make a decision |

Judicial Review | The right of courts to determine the constitutionality of 1. Laws 2. Acts of the executive branch |
Criminal Law | Determines whether a person is or is not guilty of breaking a law |
Civil Law | When the court settles a disagreement between two parties. (Ex: divorce , employee vs. boss or company) |

Bail | the temporary release of a prisoner in exchange for security given for the due appearance of the prisoner |
Arraignment | to state the charges against someone who is accused of a crime in a formal procedure before a judge |
Probable Cause | evidence that gives someone a reason to think that a crime has been or is being committed |
Plaintiff | a person who sues another person or accuses another person of a crime ( CIVIL ONLY) |
Defendant | a person who is being sued or accused of a crime in a court of law (Civil and Criminal) |
Compensation | something that is done or given to make up for damage, trouble (Ex: money, community service) |
Due Process | The Constitutional protection against unfair government actions and laws |
Appellate Court | deals with people attempting to reverse legal decisions. |
Misdemeanor | minor offense, rather than a serious crime |
Felony | serious crime, like murder, arson, or burglary. |
Jury | group that decides a contest or a court case together |
Jail | a correctional institution used to detain persons who are in the lawful custody of the government |
PLea | a defendant's answer by a factual matter |
verdict | the findings of a jury on issues of fact submitted to it for decision |
Damages | a sum of money paid in compensation for loss or injury |
Indictment | a formal document written for a prosecuting attorney charging a person with some offense |
appeal | take a court case to a higher court for review |
