Term | Definition |
Probability Scale | A number line going from 0 - 1 used compare probability of events happening. |
Certain | The word used for an outcome that will always happen |
Likely | The word used for an outcome that is between "even chance" and "certain". |
Even Chance | The word used for an outcome that will happen half the time. |
Unlikely | The word used for an outcome that is between "impossible" and "even chance". |
Impossible | The word used for an outcome that will never happen |
notation | A system of symbols used to represent special things. |
Area Model | A type of bar model that shows visually how likely an outcome will occur compared to other possible outcomes. |
Tree Diagram | A model that show all possible outcomes of a compound probability situation. |
Frequency Chart | A chart that gives how often each particular outcome happened. |
Outcome | the possible result of an experiment |
Number of trials | The number of time an experiment is conducted. Should be at least 20 in order to get an accurate picture of probability |
Simple Probability | A situation or experiment that has a single independent event occurring. |
Compound Probability | A situation or experiment that has two independent events occurring. |
Theoretical/Mathematical Probability | also known as calculated probability because is the fraction of a certain outcome occurring over all possible outcomes occurring |
Experimental/Empirical Probability | the fraction of a certain outcome that occurred from an experiment over the total number of times the experiment occurred |
Sample Space | a list of all possible outcomes of an experiment |
Tally | A way of keeping count by drawing marks. Every fifth mark is drawn across the previous 4 marks. |
