Term | Definition |
Geography | The study of people, their environments, and their resources. |
History | An account of what has happened in the lives of different peoples. |
Latitude | Measure distance north and south from the equator. |
Longitude | Measure distance east and west from the prime meridian. |
Irrigate | Bring water to the desert |
Globe | A sphere with a map of the world printed on it. |
Cartographer | A mapmaker |
Map Projection | A way of drawing the Earth on a flat surface. |
Hemisphere | The two halves of the earth |
Standard Time Zone | World divided under 24 time zones. Measured through the prime meridian. |
Equator | Imaginary line that lies at 0 degree latitude |
Prime Meridian | Imaginary line that lies at 0 degrees longitude. |
Isthmus | a narrow strip of land that links North and South America. |
Mountain | high, steep, rugged land. |
Elevation | height above sea level. |
Hill | raised land that is lower and more rounded than a mountain |
Plain | Broad area of level land close to the sea. |
Plateau | large area of natural grassland with few or no trees or hills. |
Tributary | stream or small river that flows into a larger stream or river |
Climate | pattern of weather in a particular place |
Precipitation | the amount of water that falls as rain, sleet, hail or snow. |
Altitude | The height above sea level. |
